How Do I Create A Blood Stained Note Paper Effect? - Difficulty: Intermediate

In this tutorial, you'll be creating a graphic illustration based on a rough, scratched metal textured background. By finding an average looking piece of note paper, we'll manipulating it to have a more torn, ripped, dramatic-grunge effect, and then covered in blood to resemble a horror scene photo manipulation.

1: Manipulating The Roughly Scratched, Metal Textured Background

  • 1.1. Edit » Transform » Scale the background down to an appropiate size.
  • 1.2. Add a Layer » Layer Style » Inner Shadow with 100% Opacity, 0px Distance, 0% Choke, and a full 250px Size.
  • 1.3. Now, select Image » Adjustments » Brightness/Contrast. Raise the Contrast by 50.













2: Designing The Basic Note Paper Effect From Scratch

  • 2.1. Create A New Layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), form a rectangle in the shape of a piece of note paper, and Fill (G) it white.
  • 2.2. Now, using the the Rectangular and Elliptical Marquee Tool again, erase areas (as shown below) to
  • resemble a note paper effect.
  • 2.3. Create A New Layer (Ctrl + Shift + N) again.
  • 2.4. By using the Single Row and Single Column Marquee Tool, form the note papers lines and fill them respectfully blue and red.
  • 2.5. Create A Clipping Mask over the note paper and then Merge Down (Ctrl + E) into it.















3: Manipulating The Note Paper To Appear More Torn, Ripped, Grungey & Dramatic

  • 3.1. Add a Layer » Layer Style » Drop Shadow, but leave the settings as they already are.
  • 3.2. Add a Layer » Layer Style » Inner Shadow. - maximize the Size to 250px, but leave the other settings alone.
  • 3.3. Add a Layer » Layer Style » Pattern Overlay with 90% Opacity. Choose the Kraft Paper Pattern under the Color Paper section.
  • 3.4. Select the Oil Pastel Large 63 Brush and 'rip/tear' pieces of the note paper, and you should have something like the image below.
  • 3.5. With the blood brushes (the light speckle ones), erase parts of the note paper to create a slightly grunge effect.
  • 3.6. Merge Down (Ctrl + E) the note paper layer into a A New Layer (Ctrl + Shift + N).
  • 3.7. Edit » Transform the background down to an appropiate size and rotation.
  • 3.8. With Image » Adjustments » Brightness/Contrast, raise the Contrast by 75, and then again by 50.
  • 3.9. With Image » Adjustments » Hue/Saturation, raise the Hue by 7, and the Saturation by -30.















4: Adding The Dried / Wet Blood Effect And Finalising The Overall Horror Scene Illustration

  • 4.1. Create A New Layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), change the Blending Mode to Linear Burn, and Opacity to 75%.
  • 4.2. Add a Layer » Layer Style » Inner Shadow with 100% Opacity, 0px Distance, 0% Choke, and a 36px Size. Vary if required.
  • 4.3. Now, use the blood splatter and dried blood brushes to decorate the pale, creepy hand with deep red blood.
  • 4.4. Merge Visible (Ctrl + Shift + E), and then with Image » Adjustments » Hue/Saturation, lower the Saturation of the illustration by 20.
  • 4.5. With Image » Adjustments » Brightness/Contrast, lower the Brightness by 20, and heighten the Contrast by 25.
